For our latest In Bed With, we caught up with Megan Dunn—author of three wildly entertaining books, including The Mermaid Chronicles, where she dives into the whimsical world of professional mermaids and motherhood. Known for her wit and charm, Megan’s world is filled with books, bedroom snacking, and bedtime champagne. Whether she’s dreaming of a William Morris bedspread or writing in bed in the comfort of her duvet-clad haven, Megan’s take on the art of the bedroom is refreshingly candid and irresistibly charming.

In Bed With... Megan Dunn
1. Who are you?
My name is Megan Dunn. I am the author of three eccentric but hugely entertaining books,
Tinderbox (available as an ebook), Things I Learned at Art School, and most recently The
Mermaid Chronicles, about my mid-life adventure to meet professional mermaids, motherhood,
mischief, mundanity and more. I also curate exhibitions and once upon a time talked about art
with Kim Hill on RNZ.
2. What does the public know best about you?
That I am frank and funny with a face for radio. But alas, no more Kim Hill.
3. Tell us about one of your greatest achievements?
My daughter Fearne, I had her at forty, so it was last chance saloon. I have also written a few
good essays, and been known to beguile people sometimes, in person and on the page.
4. Are you a cotton, linen or something else person?
My partner is cotton all the way. I rest with him. We could convert to linen though.
5. Do you sleep in black or white or colour?
Blue and yellow. I still get mascara on white pillowcases that I take too long to wash.
6. Describe you perfect bed?
Well, I did recently see some amazing William Morris bedspreads in the UK. I now covet a
majestic intricate William Morris bedspread. My life will move to a new level of contentment
when I finally get one.
7. Does size matter, when it comes to beds?
Yes. Needs to be big enough for one thin man, one chocolate eating mascara-wearing woman, one
growing daughter and errant British shorthair cat.
8. What is your must-have bedroom extravagance?
Books. Jenga stacks of them.
9. Tell us about the most memorable bedroom you’ve slept in.
Forthcoming.
10. What’s your favourite bedroom story?
Forthcoming.
11. What’s your favourite bedtime story?
Phoebe and the Hot Water Bottles. A childhood story Mum bought me, about a little girl who
lives with her dad above a chemist. Her Dad buys her a hot water bottle for her birthday every
year. She has over a hundred hot water bottles and uses them to put out a fire in the chemist
one night while her Dad is out.
12. Have you eaten spaghetti carbonara in bed? If not, what’s the best thing you’ve eaten in
bed?
I love eating cheese on toast in bed. Especially Vogels, while reading. I am also prone to
drinking champagne in bed.
13. What present or past figure would you like to be serenaded or entertained by?
The actor Sam Rockwell. Is this serenade in bed?
14. Watch, listen or read, what are you currently consuming in bed?
Nearly everything. Books. Thoughts. Snacks.
15. What are your relaxation night time rituals?
Playing Fishdom on my phone. I know. Bad habit.
16. Have you ever made a hot water bottle cover? Do you make art in bed?
I write in bed, especially when I feel desperate, which is often. I actually have memories of
taking hotties in their knitted covers to bed in childhood. My Mum had a hottie right up till the
end. The memory of her clutching it to her chest stays with me.
17. Pillows; fluffy or flat, 1,2 or more?
I actually prefer a flat pillow! I am heathen.
18. Blankets or duvet, why?
Duvet. It’s not the 1800s.
19. Do you have cold feet when going to bed?
Yes, inherited from my mother, she who wore several pairs of slippers at once, and was once
the purveyor of hotties in their knitted jackets.
20. Night owl or morning lark?
Once a night owl, now a morning lark.
