In Bed With... Doris de Pont

At George Street Linen, we know the bedroom is more than just a place to sleep—it's a sanctuary, a creative space, and sometimes, the setting for unforgettable moments. In our new series, In Bed With, we talk to inspiring people about what happens when they retreat to their beds. Our first guest, the ever-stylish Doris de Pont, opens up about her perfect bed, favourite reads, and her love for linen.

1. Who are you?

My name is Doris de Pont. I’m a fashion person, family person, Grey Lynn person and maker.

2. What does the public know best about you?

There are two things that people know about me. Some people know me through fashion and my involvement with the NZ Fashion Museum. Some people know me by sight, as a fashionable cyclist.

3. Tell us about one of your greatest achievements?

Other than family, it’s founding the New Zealand Fashion Museum.

4. Are you a cotton, linen or something else person?

Linen

5. Do you sleep in black or white or colour?

In whatever is comfortable

6. Describe you perfect bed?

It’s the ‘Baby Bear bed’, not too hard and not too soft.

7. Does size matter, when it comes to beds?

It certainly does. My husband is 2m tall, so we have a bespoke bed.

8. What is your must-have bedroom extravagance?

Not applicable.

9. Tell us about the most memorable bedroom you’ve slept in.

A fale on the beach in Samoa. The most magnificent thing is that we arrived by bike and people were there to make up our bed where we wanted it.

10. What’s your favourite bedroom story?

In my youth I shared a bedroom with my twin sister. We had a line down the middle of the room, one side was orderly the other side was disorderly. I like to see my options.

11. What’s your favourite bedtime story?

Any good novel.

12. Have you eaten spaghetti carbonara in bed? If not, what’s the best thing you’ve eaten in bed?

No food in the bedroom! Any eating is X-rated.

13. What historical figure would you like to go to bed with?

I’d like to go to bed with Marlon Williams serenading me.

14. Watch, listen or read, what are you currently consuming in bed?

I just read Lioness by Emily Perkins which I liked. Before that I read Pet by Catherine Chidgey which I loved.

15. What are your relaxation night time rituals?

Coffee followed by reading. I won’t get into bed before I’ve brushed my teeth.

16. Have you ever made a hot water bottle cover? Do you make art in bed?

Never. Never.

17. Pillows; fluffy or flat, 1,2 or more?

One fluffy.

18. Blankets or duvet, why?

Duvet, because it hugs the body.

19. Do you have cold feet when going to bed?

Sometimes. When I do, and don’t have a husband on hand, I take a wheat bag to bed.

20. Night owl or morning lark?

Night owl.

Nighty night.
